A recent survey conducted by ASK BOSCO®, a leading AI marketing platform, has revealed that three-quarters of UK marketers have terminated or considered terminating their partnerships with digital marketing agencies due to inadequate reporting.
The survey, conducted in collaboration with OnePoll, involved 100 UK marketing managers and highlighted a growing need for transparency, accuracy, and actionable insights in digital marketing reporting.
The survey uncovered significant dissatisfaction among businesses with the quality of reports provided by their agencies. Notably, 62% of respondents reported stopping or contemplating ending their collaboration with an agency because of insufficient transparency in reporting. A further 73% cited a poor level of analysis and lack of actionable insights as reasons for ending or considering ending their agency relationships.
Transparency and Accuracy in Digital Marketing Reporting
The research highlighted that 95% of respondents had experienced situations where their digital marketing agency selectively emphasised positive metrics while downplaying less favourable outcomes. This practice of “massaging” results has led to a profound trust deficit between businesses and their marketing partners. The lack of transparency and incomplete reporting makes it difficult for businesses to make informed decisions, ultimately undermining the effectiveness of their marketing strategies.
The survey also revealed that 90% of respondents believe that digital marketing agencies should offer more transparency in their reports, advocating for easily accessible data and clearer insights. Additionally, 77% of respondents identified inaccuracies in reports due to human error, further exacerbating the trust issues between agencies and their clients.
Key Factors for Effective Reporting
The study identified the top five most important factors that marketers consider when evaluating reports from digital marketing agencies: Clarity, Accuracy in forecasting, Actionable insights, Transparency, and Customisation to specific needs. These factors are crucial in fostering trust and ensuring that businesses receive reports that are both comprehensive and useful for decision-making.
Emily Hakner, Head of Product at ASK BOSCO®, commented on the findings, stating, “The digital marketing industry is at a critical juncture. Data from the survey indicates a strong demand for greater transparency and more insightful reporting. Businesses are calling for greater transparency and accountability, with a clear preference for reports that provide easily accessible data and clearer insights.”
The Impact of Reporting on Client-Agency Relationships
Remeny Armitage, Founder of Brilliant and Human, which helps agencies understand client needs, echoed the concerns raised by the survey. She noted that trust is a key component of maintaining happy and loyal clients, and that trust often begins with the reports provided by digital marketing agencies. The issues highlighted in the survey, such as the selective reporting of positive information and human errors in reporting, contribute to a breakdown of trust that can erode the relationship between an agency and its client.
Armitage emphasised the importance of using transparent, impartial, and accurate reporting tools like ASK BOSCO® to rebuild trust and strengthen client-agency relationships. She suggested that by adopting such tools, agencies can focus more on building engaged and trusted relationships with their clients, ultimately leading to loyalty and long-term partnerships.
In response to the challenges highlighted by the survey, ASK BOSCO® has launched the ASK BOSCO® AI Reporting Suite, a feature within its AI platform designed to centralise marketing, e-commerce, and B2B data. The AI Reporting Suite offers a no-code setup for customised reporting and dashboard creation, providing instant data insights through advanced AI search functionality.
